By Ian Birch

The first ever Newcastle Mental Health day is set to raise awareness of mental health issues this Saturday, 3rd September.

Capoeira Martial Arts DancersThe day aims to reduce stigma surrounding mental health, raise awareness about discrimination faced by people with mental health difficulties and highlight local services.

It will feature a wide range of family entertainment including jazz and folk music, Lindy Hop dancing, Capoeria (Brazilian martial art dancing) and plenty more.  There’ll be lots of information stalls from mental health organisations in Newcastle – ranging from small service-user-led groups to the NHS.

Alisdair Cameron from Launchpad said: “The day will demystify mental health and mental health problems from the moderate to the more severe and allow people to know what help is available, whilst having fun doing so.  As well as reducing the stigma that often surrounds mental health problems, we also want to use the day to highlight and share the 5 ways to mental wellbeing with people in the City.”

These include:

  • Connect
  • Be active
  • Take notice
  • Keep learning
  • Give

Colm Gallagher from the Newcastle Primary Care Mental Health Team added: “Mental health services are here to help you through your troubles.  They can provide you with support and ways to recognise and help you through your problems”.
