Fight against depression in the workplace

European Depression Association “open letter” calls MEPs to make the fight against depression in the workplace a priority.

By John Simmons

On this Labour Day the EDA is calling the public to join their campaign and show their support to make the fight against depression in the workplace a priority. With an open letter, the EDA is urging policy makers and Members of the European Parliament to make sure they take depression into serious consideration when making policies regarding workers and the work place.

It is estimated that 1 in 10 European Union citizens will suffer from depression at some point in their life, with extreme consequences not only for the sufferer, their relatives and friends, but also for the economy in terms of loss of performance and productivity at work and sick leave, costing the European economy billions each year.

Unfortunately, Depression is also largely under-diagnosed and even with a successful diagnosis, it can take time for correct medications and/or therapies to improve the condition. The EDA is a group of organisations, patients, researchers and health care professionals from 19 countries across Europe aiming to break the stigma around Depression and providing information on the impact of Depression on people’s lives.
