New mental health unit for Devon

There is good news for the people of Devon in the form a approved plans to redevelop a mental health unit in Dawlish.

The multi-million pound vision is expected take place after a NHS trust was granted planning approval.

Langdon Hospital in Dawlish has received consent to proceed with the £33 million redevelopment after application by the Devon Partnership NHS Trust.

Health bosses say that this ambitious plan will create a better environment for patients and staff.

Langdon Hospital provides treatment and care for people with mental health and learning disability needs, many of them have come into contact with the criminal justice system.  It is also home to the Devon Partnership NHS Trust’s forensic service.

The existing buildings will be refurbished and the replacement of the Butler Clinic (a regional medium-level secure unit) with the building of a new 60 bed unit which will be divided into four ward areas.

The construction will start in the autumn with completion of the development expected in spring of 2013.  It is designed to be able to look after people who require differing levels of secure accommodation and give varying types of care.

We would like to hear more about new mental health care facilities.  Goodness knows we need them.
