Christina Novelli, Toy Horses and The Jude play gig for mental health

By Charlotte Fantelli

This coming Saturday (10th March 12) sees some of the hottest up-and-coming names in pop/rock getting together all in the aid of mental health.

The 100 club Oxford Street plays host to three of the country’s hottest new acts; Radio 1 regular The Jude, Stephen Fry’s ‘New favourite indie band’ Toy Horses, and not forgetting the voice that tempted me away from heavy American rock for a moment and dazzled her way onto my personal 2012 playlist; Christina Novelli.

You may have seen Christina on the TV series ‘Candy Bar Girls,’ you will undoubtedly know her father ‘Jean Christophe-Novelli’, but if you are not one of the 2million+ youtube visitors who have already discovered her musical talent, I urge you to check out the video below and be blown away by her talent.

I caught up with Christina to ask why this gig, in aid of Mind and Rethink, was so important to her.

‘I think people can disregard it [mental illness] and not realise the seriousness. Talking about mental health saves lives, it is vital.’

The gig has been organised by Christina’s best friend Lucy Powell, who put on the event last year to great success. ‘I was honoured to play the gig last year and thrilled to be back. I am 100% behind the cause.’ Christina tells me.

It is clear that mental health is a subject close to Christina’s heart as she talks passionately about the subject ‘people close to me have suffered depression and it can be such a lonely place. People may not realise the seriousness because it’s not cancer or something, but the mind is so powerful. Getting support saves lives.’

Wise and meaningful words that speak for the 1 in 4 of us that experience mental illness and the millions more who are touched by its effects. A lack of understanding and a failure to discuss mental health problems have kept it a taboo for many generations, for me it is heart-warming to see a young generation of rising stars coming together in a great gig at a cool London venue, to raise awareness of, and money for mental health. I urge you to get behind this gig, spread the word and BUY TICKETS!
