Isle of Man tackles eating disorders

By Liz Lockhart

An event has been arranged on the Isle of Man which offers help and hope to those suffering from eating disorders.  A meeting will take place on 22nd February between 18.30 and 19.30 at the museum on Kingswood Grove in Douglas.

The aim of this meeting is to highlight the problems associated with eating disorders and to present solutions to overcome destructive eating patterns.  Clinical statistics suggest that 10% of eating disorder sufferers have anorexia, 40% have bulimia and 50% have an unspecified disorder which includes binge eating.

A report on BBC News says that an Isle of Man social spokesperson said that the road to recovery would be outlined at the meeting.  He added ‘There will be a variety of information available to view and to take away, such as understanding eating disorders and tips for parents, families, siblings and friends. There will also be information for any professional working with a person who has an eating disorder.’

The leading eating disorder charity BEAT suggests that eating disorders affect around 1.6 million people in the U.K. whilst the Royal College of Psychiatrists believe that 1 in 150 fifteen year old girls and 1 in 1000 men will suffer from anorexia.  It is important to remember that with the right treatment people can recover from eating disorders and live full and healthy lives.
